Students must hold the Associate of Science in Medical Laboratory Science from a NAACLS-accredited program and be nationally certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT).

*A total of 120 credit hours are needed to attain the Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science degree. Credits will vary based on university advisement.

Online Courses

Coursework in this 120-hour MLS online program consists of prerequisite courses, general education courses, and core courses that cover topics like microbiology, organic chemistry and hematology. Students must complete up to 46 hours of Foundation Courses. Students must have an Associate degree to be admitted to this program.

Although all Medical Laboratory Science (MLSC) courses are offered online, students may need to take biology and organic chemistry courses not currently offered online by LSUA. In such cases, students should contact the ASMLS/BSMLS Program Coordinator at (318)473-6466 for advising as to transfer equivalency of such courses taken at other universities. In addition, MLSC project courses taken during the final year of the program may require the assignment of a preceptor. In such cases, the Program Coordinator will work with students to find a preceptor at, or as close as possible, to their current work sites.

Twenty-six hours of credit will be awarded to students who are graduates of an associate degree program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS), who hold certification as an MLT/CLT, and who have one year of clinical experience.

  • LSUA should receive your information within 3 weeks of an electronic submission of the FAFSA. Once we receive your information, you will receive a letter from our Financial Aid Management office. You may need to provide our office with additional information. If you do, please return the requested information as soon as possible so that we can process your financial aid request.

Satisfactory Academic Progress

In order to receive federal financial aid (grants, loans, or federal work study funds), students must make satisfactory academic progress.

  • Student's cumulative GPA must be at or above a 2.0.
  • Student must have earned 70% of the total credits they have attempted at any post-secondary education institution whose credits are accepted as transfer at LSU of Alexandria.
  • Student cannot attempt more than 150% of the credits required for the degree they are seeking. Courses that have been withdrawn (received a grade of W) AND courses that have been bankrupted count in total attempted hours.
  • Students who do not meet these requirements may submit an appeal to the financial aid appeals committee.

Admissions

To be admitted to the LSUA Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science online program (CLS to MLS), applicants must meet the following admission requirements:

  • Have graduated from an accredited Clinical Lab (CLT/CLS) program in any state and currently hold an unencumbered CLT/CLS license;
  • Be unconditionally admitted to the university and have declared MLS as a major;
  • Have an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher;
  • Be admitted to the university and have submitted all official transcripts from other universities attended;
  • Not be concurrently enrolled in a medical lab science program at another university.

Note: Students will receive credit for CLS courses from their Associate Program. Non-Clinical Lab courses will be evaluated on a course by course basis.

CLS to MLS Degree Requirements

  • Students must complete all of the requirements pertaining to the LSUA baccalaureate degrees. The MLS Degree is 120 credit hours;
  • Students must take at least 39 hours at the 3000 level or above and at least 17 hours at the 4000 level;
  • Students are required to make a grade of "C" or higher in all MLSC Courses.

Additional Program Requirements

In addition to the general requirements entry into the Medical Laboratory Science program requires that the applicants meet the following criteria:

  • Students must be unconditionally admitted to the university and declare Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) as their major.
  • Students must have attained an overall college grade point average of at least 2.0.
  • Students must have completed with a grade of "C" or higher all courses listed under the General Education Requirements and Additional Requirements sections of the MLSC curriculum.
  • Students must be able to meet the program's technical standards/essential requirements.
  • Students must be graduates of an MLT/CLT associate degree program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS).
  • Students must hold certification as an MLT(ASCP), CLT(NCA) or equivalent.
  • Students must submit to the Department of Allied Health a completed MLS Application Form and all other required documents by August 10.

Progression Requirements

These following progression criteria apply to the student's progress prior to and after enrollment in the MLT/CLT to MLS program:

  • Student must earn a grade of "C" or higher in each course required by the curriculum.
  • Student must maintain an overall grade point average of at least 2.0.

Note: Students may be dismissed from the program if their clinical performance is unsatisfactory and/or if they fail on a second attempt to complete a MLSC course with a "C" or higher. If a student is not enrolled in a MLSC course for a semester, application for readmission to the MLS program is required.
